It is a colorless liquid that acts as a crosslinking agent for room-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber and a coupling agent for fillers like glass fiber and silica. As a key component in sol-gel systems, it is used to create silica gels and silicone resins, enhancing the mechanical strength, heat, and moisture resistance of composites. It is also used for rendering surfaces water repellent and as a strengthening treatment agent for laminated plastics. The presence of hydrolyzable methoxy groups allows it to react with moisture to form a siloxane network.
